More than 50 House Democrats pledged to vote against health care reform legislation if it doesn’t include a robust government-run insurance program.
They object to a compromise reached Wednesday between four moderate Democrats and Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Under that compromise, a public plan would be offered to individuals and small businesses as an alternative to private insurance, but the public plan would negotiate the rates it pays to health care providers.
